Tanzania import guide

Know the basic requirements before choosing a vehicle for Tanzania.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Basic import rules for Tanzania

Sources reviewed 10 Oct 2026

This guide covers mainland Tanzania. Confirm Zanzibar requirements separately. Confirm age eligibility and the current tax assessment for your specific car.

01Inspection

Inspect before shipment

Used vehicles from Japan require inspection through a TBS-appointed provider under the PVoC programme. Obtain the Certificate of Roadworthiness (CoR).

02Compliance

Missing certificates can cost more

TBS provides for destination inspection and penalties for regulated used vehicles shipped without a CoR. A failed vehicle may need repairs or be returned.

03Documents

Keep the inspection and export records

Ask your clearing agent to check the CoR, export certificate, invoice and shipping documents before departure.

04Import costs

Check the TRA assessment

Use the TRA used-vehicle valuation process to confirm duties and taxes. The car and freight quote does not include local clearance and registration.
