Kenya import guide

Know the basic requirements before choosing a vehicle for Kenya.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Basic import rules for Kenya

Sources reviewed 10 Oct 2026

The 2019 cutoff applies to arrival in 2026. Check the notice for your actual arrival year before shipment.

01Vehicle age

2019 or newer first registration

For arrival in 2026. The eight-year limit uses first registration, not the model year. Confirm arrival eligibility before purchase.

02Steering

Right-hand drive required

Standard used-car imports must be right-hand drive (RHD).

03Inspection

Roadworthiness inspection

Arrange inspection by a KEBS-appointed agent in Japan and obtain the Certificate of Roadworthiness before shipment.

04Documents

Prepare original documents

Commercial invoice, bill of lading, foreign logbook and inspection certificate. Your clearing agent confirms the full customs checklist.

05Import costs

Budget for local taxes and clearance

Kenyan duties, taxes, registration and port charges are separate from the car and ocean freight quote. Request a landed-cost assessment.

06Clearance

Use a licensed clearing agent

Check your KRA PIN and importer documents before the vehicle arrives.
